The Port of Charleston is the #1 fastest growing port in the nation with six public terminals, owned by the SC Ports Authority (SCPA).
According to the SCPA, the Ports Authority delivers $63.4 billion in annual statewide economic impact and is responsible for 224,963 S.C. jobs. They operate on their own profits and exist solely for the benefit of the Palmetto State residents.
The Port of Charleston is broken into 6 public terminals:
Wando Welch Terminal: The largest of the terminals in the Port of Charleston, the Wando Welch terminal was built for bulk cargo containers. Its innovative design has allowed space for 20k+ grounded & 3k+ wheeled container slots and CSX & Norfolk Southern rail service by RapidRail.
Columbus Street Terminal: Located in the City of Charleston, the Columbus Street Terminal is a facility of all trades and is capable of maintaining project cargo, breakbulk, heavy lift, roll stock and more. Spanning 155 acres, this port has rail access, warehouses, and plenty of space to do the heavy lifting.
North Charleston Terminal: Located in the City of North Charleston, this terminal has easy and direct access to I-26 and I-526 and on dock and near dock railways, making the location ideal for the quick transport of container freight.
Veterans Terminal: As the name implies, the Veterans Terminal, located in North Charleston, is a fully secured 110 acre terminal used for project cargo, breakbulk, bulk, and roll-on/roll-off cargo. Spanning the Cooper River, this facility has warehouses and railways to help their efforts run smoothly.
Union Pier Terminal: The Union Pier Terminal is the main source of non-traditional freight including metals, equipment, forestry products & paper as well as project cargo. This facility boasts 500K sprinkler protected sheds, storage areas for asphalt & concrete as well as covered rail access to all warehouses.
Cruise Terminal: Charleston, SC has become one of the top travel destinations in the United States (and the world!) making this port an ideal location for locals, travelers, and visitors alike to cruise into the area and partake in some Charleston charm before setting sail for the tropics.
Hugh K. Leatherman, Sr. Terminal: The SCPA is currently building the only permitted new port facility on the East and Gulf coasts. Construction has commenced on this 280-acre terminal and is hoping to boost Port of Charleston capacity by up to 50%. Phase one the Terminal is scheduled for opening in 2021.
